No matter how well you plan, you will always get a curve ball thrown your way by a client in the form of a last-minute request. From requests, which range from additional branding onsite to sourcing handkerchief scarfs for the hostesses just three hours before show-time; it is all part of the job and you either float or sink, luckily for me I not only float but I find the challenge quite exciting.
I approach the situation systematically, searching through archives in my mind for a solution or an alternative. Weighing out timeframes of how long or how far a resolution can be found and analyzing the probability of pulling it all off just in the nick of time.
The adrenaline pumping as you work against the clock, a steady flow of phone calls with trusted suppliers as well as hunting for the closest options and eventually a breakthrough that makes you want to jump out your seat with excitement. A deep sense of fulfilment knowing that you managed to push the limits and exceeded the client’s expectation is what makes it all worth it.
Saving the day is part of the scope of work in any fast-paced industry, be it PR and communications or exhibitions and events, it is not for everyone, but for those who do have a flair for working well under pressure and who thrive in situations that require a calculated decision will flourish in any industry.
