MBC promotes Barnett to position of group CEO

Pan-Arab broadcaster MBC has named Sam Barnett as its new CEO.

Barnett takes on a role previously held by the group’s chairman, Sheikh Waleed Al Ibrahim, and his promotion from chief operating officer is recognition of “nine years of remarkable work and sustained contributions to the group’s growth and leadership”.

He will continue to work under the leadership of Sheikh Waleed, chairman of the board, with full support from Ali Al Hedeithy, vice-chairman. Commenting on the appointment, Al Hedeithy said: “Sam’s contributions over the years have been instrumental in the group’s growth and success, as he was able to instill fundamental changes through his dedication and entrepreneurship.”

Barnett, who who has been with MBC since 2002 and is a graduate of Cambridge University, added: “I will continue to deliver on performance and implement best international practices, as we celebrate the end of a fruitful year, and aspire for many great ones to come.”

The appointment of Barnett follows the arrival in September of Ali Jaber as group TV director following the retirement of Tim Riordan. MBC is the region’s biggest broadcaster.
