Agency sought for 2011 Asian Cup

The organisers of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar are looking to appoint an agency to handle the tournament’s promotional advertising in the run-up to kick-off next January.

Amira Yehia, head of marketing and advertising for the event’s Local Organising Committee, confirmed that a number of agencies were being considered to handle the account, which will include both above-the-line and below-the-line components.

Qatar, which has held the finals once before, was chosen to host the fifteenth edition of the Asian Cup in 2007, while telecom firm Qtel was announced as the main sponsor n November 2008.

The 2007 finals in Jakarta were famously won by Iraq, which completed one of sport’s greatest fairytales by beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 to provide a rare moment of celebration in its war-torn homeland. Next year’s 16 qualifying teams are Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, North Korea, South Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the UAE and Uzbekistan.
